Adult male Tufted duck (Aythya fuligula), Linlithgow Loch. The male has a dark green head and usually an obvious tuft. The female is brown and still has a tuft. Both sexes have a large white patch on the flanks.

Immature Black-headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), Linlithgow Loch. It is immature because of the brown feathers on its wings. It is also in winter plumage, as can be seen from the black dot behind the head, which becomes a full black head in the summer.

Adult Herring gull (Larus argentatus), Linlithgow Loch. Herring Gulls are resident in Britain so can be seen at any time of year. The grey back is characteristic of this species, which is one of the larger gulls.
