The Small pearl-bordered fritillary (Boloria selene), seen here, can be difficult to distinguish from the Pearl-bordered Fritillary (Boloria euphrosyne) unless the underwing is viewed clearly. It does however frequent damper and grassy habitats, unlike the Pearl-bordered. Leopard slug (Limax maximus) at Gartness, near Drymen. Among the largest keeled slugs, the adult measures 10-20 cm. Colouring is variable, although generally a light greyish or grey-brown with darker spots and blotches. Mating method is unusual and distinctive: the pair hang suspended in the air from a tree branch or other structure using a thick thread of mucus. Scanned from a slide taken by CE Palmar

The Maid of the Loch was launched in 1953, replacing two older vessels to become the largest inland paddle steamer in Britain.This image was taken shortly before the steamer has its last commercial voyage on 31st August 1981. Restoration is now underway on the Maid of the Loch, with intentions for it to be relaunched in 2018. Scanned from a slide taken by CE Palmar in 1981.
