Paddle steamer PS Waverley in Girvan harbour. On this day, she was stuck in the harbour due to an unexpectedly low tide, and we had to abandon our sail round Ailsa Craig, and be bussed back to Ayr. The upside was that we were given free tickets to be used on future cruises, which was more than fair.

Turnberry golf resort on the Firth of Clyde, host to the Open Championship on at least four occasions. The 5 star hotel was completed in 1906. In both World Wars, the hotel became a hospital, and Turnberry airfield was used as a military air base.

The 18th century castle of Culzean on the Firth of Clyde, a country house rather than a defensive castle, built by Robert Adam under instruction from the 10th Earl of Cassilis. General Eisenhower stayed here four times in the period after the Second World War, during which he was Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, and in recognition of this was given an apartment in the castle. Culzean is now in the hands of the National Trust for Scotland.
