Glasgow - Kelvindale
A Blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) with a sunflower heart in its beak. The bird visits a feeder for a few seconds, grabs a seed, then retreats to a bush where it can consume the seed safely. Taken by David Palmar in a Kelvindale, Glasgow garden. behind the bird is a hanging nest or resting hole.

Male Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla), a warbler which mostly migrates to Africa for the winter, but a few stay in the UK, or migrate to the UK from Scandinavia for the winter. Taken in a Glasgow garden in January by David Palmar. Despite being insectivorous in the summer, they are attracted to the garden in winter by sunflower seed and fat balls with seeds embedded in them.

Newshot Island, Renfrewshire, really a peninsula now, formed when the Clyde was straightened and deepened to imrove navigation. Beyond the sheep is the original channel of the Clyde, and in the background is Erskine New Town. The date of creation is a guess but the year is correct. Town Hall Clock or Moschatel (Adoxa moschatellina), Cartland Craigs National Nature Reserve, South Lanarkshire. It is a native perennial, carpet-forming plant up to 15cm tall. Flowering stems are erect, with 2 opposite leaves. Leaves are arranged in threes and long-stalked. It is often found in damp, shaded woodland, banks of rivers and streams and shaded hedge banks. It flowers in spring.

Gorse (Ulex europaeus) bush by the River Carron, showing the edge of the industrial port of Grangemouth, looking towards the Firth of Forth. Gorse flowers between January and June and can provide shelter to wildlife during bad weather. Its flowers are also a good source of nectar for invertebrates.
