Kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla), taken from the Islay ferry by David Palmar. The yellow bill and wingtips "dipped in ink" help to distinguish the Kittiwake from the similar Black-headed Gull, even if you can't see the black legs which are tucked into its plumage.

The black legs and feet, and black wingtips ("dipped in ink" and without "mirrors") distinguish the Kittiwake from other common gull species. Kittiwakes are surface feeders, and are declining around Britain due to lack of food availability caused by climate change.

Kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) return to the Isle of May in late April/early May and begin to build their nests. They lay 1-2 eggs (sometimes 3), and once hatched, chicks have a white downy plumage. This fluffy plumage will start to be replaced by feathers after only 5 days. Photo taken by Gemma Woodford.
