Common Bird's Foot Trefoil can be distinguished from Greater Bird's Foot Trefoil (Lotus pedunculatus) as Common Bird's Foot Trefoil is taller and its flowers appear in clusters of 2 to 7. Common Bird's Foot Trefoil's flower petals will often range from yellow to red at the tips, whereas Greater Bird's Foot Trefoil will remain purely yellow. Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis) on its cliff nest in Ham Voe, Foula, with Red campion (Silene dioica) on the cliff below, and the yellow flowers of Bird's Foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus) both above and below. The Fulmar lays a single egg which both sexes incubate for around 53 days.

Moss carder bumblebee (Bombus muscorum) on Bird's Foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), Balranald, North Uist. More frequent in the north and west of Scotland, this bee can be found in flower-rich habitats. The abdomen is usually paler than the thorax, appearing almost blonde in some individuals, while the thorax is often a deep ginger colour, darker than the Common Carder.
