Goldfinches are often found in open, partially wooded lowlands, forest edges, thickets, heaths, streams, riverine and marshy areas with bushes and trees, grasslands with scattered trees, scrub, orchards, gardens, and urban parks and gardens. Here it is on the machair in an area of Common Daisies (Bellis perennis).

Juvenile goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis), Hogganfield Loch. Each wing feather is carefully inspected during the ringing process to determine the age of the bird. A wing rule is used to measure the outermost primaries, which are the feathers on the outer tip of the wing. These can be observed on the left hand side of the image above.
