Willow tits (Poecile montanus) in Britain live mainly in England and Wales with some in South Scotland, often in bushes rather than in trees. They have no blue, green or yellow, so can be easily told from Blue or Great tits. Although they have a thickset neck and big head which help to distinguish them from the very similar Marsh tit, it is easier to distinguish them by their calls. The sexes are alike. This one is colour ringed so it can be tracked as an individual. It was photographed in Lanarkshire, at a location where they can no longer be found.

Shetland - Fetlar
Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus) in Fetlar photographed from a vehicle with a long lens to avoid disturbance. The bird landed near the vehicle to feed late one evening. In this picture there are three rings - red and white colour rings, and a BTO ring. The coloured rings enable identification of individuals without retrapping.

Shetland - Fetlar
Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus) in Fetlar photographed from the road with a long lens to avoid disturbance. This one is calling, in a series of short notes, often 7 calls in succession, one of the best ways to tell this species from a Curlew. The coloured rings enable identification of individuals without retrapping.

Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus) in Fetlar photographed from the road with a long lens to avoid disturbance. The dark stripe through the eye and the light stripe above, and the light stripe down the crown help to distinguish the Whimbrel from a Curlew. The coloured rings enable identification of individuals without retrapping.

Tiree
Colour ringed Pied Wagtail (Motacilla alba) HP on Tiree, taken by Rebecca Dickson. This bird was ringed previously on the island by the Clyde Ringing Group on 24/08/21. Here the Darvic ring can be seen with the letters HP. On the right leg is the metal British Trust for Ornithology Ring, with a pink colour ring above it. This combination is used to identify the project as multiple groups colour ring the species.
Glasgow - Broomhill, Jordanhill Claythorn and Bingham's Pond
Black-headed Gulls (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) loafing on the ice and drinking, taken by David Palmar at Bingham's Pond, Glasgow. One is colour-ringed, which when resighted and reported, allows the identification of the individual bird and the tracing of its life history. This gull was ringed in December 2020 by the Clyde Ringing Group at Victoria Park, Glasgow. Apart from a trip to Peterhead where it was spotted in April 2021, it has been seen several times since both at Victoria Park and at Bingham's Pond.
