Spotted Redshank (Tringa erythropus) record shot, taken by David Palmar at Leighton Moss. In comparison to the Common Redshank (Tringa totanus), the Spotted Redshank has a more elongated bill and longer legs. In adult Spotted Redshanks, only the lower mandible is red; however juveniles can lack the red colour completely which makes them tricky to identify without good visibility. Spotted Redshanks also have a more prominent eye stripe (supercilium) than Common Redshanks.
Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) eating from a bird feeder in a Milngavie garden. The positioning of the woodpecker's tail demonstrates its ability to use it for balancing, showing the intelligence of the species. This highlights the importance of bird feeders in gardens as they support a wide array of garden birds and more. Tiree
Redshank (Tringa totanus) defending its territory, taken by Rebecca Dickson. When birds are on territory they will call when alerted by predators or due to disturbance. It is important to note that when birds (particularly sensitive species such as waders) are repeatedly calling loudly due to your presence, it is best practice to back off as they will be protecting their nest or chicks. It is critical to avoid disturbance of breeding birds, and know when to back off after a warning call. This photo was taken with a long lens from a vehicle.
