Grayling (Hipparchia semele), taken by David Palmar. The main food source for Grayling caterpillars is Sheep's-fescue (Festuca ovina) and Red Fescue (Festuca rubra). This species has been declining on inland habitats according to the Butterfly ConservationTrust.

Underside of a Grayling (Hipparchia semele) butterfly, Inver, Jura, taken by David Palmar. A Grayling almost always lands with its wings closed, though here you can see a small part of the upper wing colour, which is similar to a Meadow Brown.
