Glenshee - Ptarmigan in Winter
Ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) pair in winter plumage, Glenshee. The female is on the left and the male on the right. He has a red wattle over his eye, while she doesn't. In a mild winter, they still turn white, and stand out against a rocky background instead of the white plumage being good camouflage. This will probably be an increasing problem with global warming.

Mountain Hare (Lepus timidus) striding out as it runs away across the snow. Even although their camouflage is excellent, their movement frequently gives them away. If they stayed still, they would be much more difficult to detect!

Glenshee - Scenery and Mountain hares in winter
Mountain Hares (Lepus timidus) have magnificent camouflage in winter, provided they are sitting against the snow! All it takes is lack of snow, or a hare sitting on a patch without snow, and they become much more obvious.
