Sea rocket (Cakile maritima). This is a pioneer annual coastal plant that is able to grow close to the splash zone on sand and shingle, it puts down a long branching tap root to stabilise itself and the sand. Fleshy leaves help to retain moisture. This photo was taken at Crossapol Bay in Coll.

Roseroot (Rhodiola rosea) and Thrift (Armeria maritima), salt-tolerant plants on Dunnet Head. Roseroot is a yellow-flowered succulent in the Stonecrop family, found in rocky mountainous and coastal areas. It has waxy leaves to reduce evaporation.
