Great Yellow Bumblebee (Bombus distinguendus) on Red Clover (Trifolium pratense), Balranald RSPB nature reserve, North Uist. One of Britain's rarest bumblebees, the Great Yellow is now restricted to some Scottish islands and the very north of Scotland. It has a particular association with nectar producing plants such as Red Clover and Bird's Foot Trefoil.

Cross-leaved heath (Erica tetralix), Lochan na Lairige, Ben Lawers. Scanned from a slide taken by CE Palmar. Similar to Bell Heather, but its flowers are larger and sit in a small cluster on one side of the stem. Most often found on heathlands, heather is a good source of nectar for a range of invertebrates.

Common Carder Bumblebee (Bombus pascuorum) on Red clover (Trifolium pratense), Balranald RSPB nature reserve, North Uist. Common Carders are ginger with black hairs on the abdomen. They have a long tongue which allows them to feed on plants with long tubular florets.

Moss Carder Bee (Bombus muscorum) on Red clover (Trifolium pratense), Balranald RSPB nature reserve, North Uist. The Moss Carder Bee has a gingery thorax, by which it can be distinguished from the Common Carder Bee, the thorax of which is orange.
