An adult Red Kite (Milvus milvus), taken by David Palmar in Cholsey, Oxfordshire. Mature Red Kites have a more distinct fork in their tail than younger birds. The rufous colouration on the chest is also much deeper in adults, resulting in a greater contrast between the colour of the chest and the pale head. In juveniles, the chest and head colour are very similar which is also a useful tool for identification.

Tree planting near Argaty Red Kites. Tree planting is good for the environment as trees absorb carbon from the atmosphere. Plastic tree protection tubes are now used as little as possible, where there is a threat of deer or rabbit browsing damaging the trees. Forest and Land Scotland now prefer fencing to tree tubes, but where they have to be used, recyclable tree tubes with less plastic are now being used.

Red kite (milvus milvus) flying between electric power lines near Amulree, Perthshire. Red kites have been reintroduced into three areas in Scotland and are spreading slowly across the country.
The need to transmit electricity from highland wind farms has necessitated the building of a huge new power line 220km from Beauly to Denny, replacing 109km of older lines, including this one.
There is some evidence of bird mortality due to collisions with power lines, which may be reduced by the increased diameter of the new lines, making them more visible.
