Great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) juvenile emerging from its nest hole, Ruchill Park, Glasgow, taken by David Palmar. The red patch on its head show that it is a juvenile. The nictitating membrane which protects its eye is visible. Woodpeckers close their nictitating membranes just before impact on a tree trunk to prevent damage to the eyes.
