Argyllshire - Colonsay and Oronsay
A Corncrake calling - an elusive, rare and threatened bird, which is much more often heard than seen. Corncrake recovery schemes, headed up by the RSPB, have helped to ensure that it is recovering. Amongst techniques used are cutting hay from the middle of the field outwards, which allows the birds a chance to run away. It often calls from deep vegetation, such as iris and nettle beds and long grass. You have to very patient to get a good view (or any view at all!) The best time to see them in Scotland is in very late April or early May, when the vegetation is not as dense as it is later in the season. They are to be found on the machair of Tiree, Coll, Iona, Islay, Colonsay and Oronsay and the Outer Hebrides.
