The eagle, in common with other birds of prey, is unable to digest hair, bones or feathers, accumulations of which are ejected from the crop in the form of castings or pellets. This pictures shows three typical ones and an unusual one composed entirely of lamb's wool. Analysis of such pellets gives an accurate index of the bird's food, which consists chiefly of rabbits and hares in the grassy districts of the western mainland, and grouse and hares in the rolling heather moorlands of central, eastern and northern areas of the HIghlands. Carrion - usually in the shape of a dead sheep or deer - forms a major food item in all districts. Nearly all of the relatively small number of lambs taken come into this latter category, as casualties are often heavy from the treacherous spring weather in the mountains.
