American Monument, Mull of Oa, Islay, Scanned from a slide taken by CE Palmar. Built in 1920 by the American Red Cross, and designed by architect Robert Walker, the monument commemorates the loss of two troop ships in 1918, the Tuscania and the Otranto. Overlooking the very spot where the Tuscania sank, the monument is built in the shape of a lighthouse and is visible from many areas on Islay.

Lennox Castle, Lennoxtown, built between 1837 and 1841 for John Lennox Kincaid, it was bought by Glasgow Corporation in 1927. It was used at different periods from 1936 as a mental hospital, a war hospital and as a maternity hospital until it was closed in 2002. It was severely damaged by fire in 2008.

The 18th century castle of Culzean on the Firth of Clyde, a country house rather than a defensive castle, built by Robert Adam under instruction from the 10th Earl of Cassilis. General Eisenhower stayed here four times in the period after the Second World War, during which he was Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, and in recognition of this was given an apartment in the castle. Culzean is now in the hands of the National Trust for Scotland.
