Bladder Campion (Silene vulgaris), a plant in the family Caryophyllaceae, on Great Cumbrae. Can be distinguished from Sea Campion as Bladder Campion is not limited to more than one flower per stem and the petals are deeply notched.

Red Campion (Silene dioica) is a common sight along rural roadside verges. It has striking deep pink flowers (rarer white campions can be found) 20mm across with notched petals on a softly hairy plant up to 1m tall. The flowers are in bloom from May to August and open during the day to attract bees and butterflies. This flower has dew or raindrops on it. Taken by David Palmar.

Red Campion (Silene dioica), is an ancient woodland indicator and can often be found in shaded woodlands during or not long after Bluebells have finished flowering. It is an important food source for invertebrates and is often mentioned in mythology. This photo was taken on Ailsa Craig, where it is unlikely that there was any ancient woodland - the plant has a widespread distribution.

Sea campion (Silene uniflora or Silene maritima) at Kirbuster, Stronsay, Orkney, a member of the Chickweed or Pinks family (Caryophyllaceae). Found on coastlines growing on top of cliffs and on shingle. Similar in appearance to Bladder campion (Silene vulgaris), but S. maritima is larger.
