Moonwort (Botrychium lunaria), Keen of Hamar, Unst, a solitary fern with a separate spore-bearing shoot, instead of having spores on the undersides of its leaves. The leaves are half-moon shaped, thus its name.

Mountain everlasting (Antennaria dioica), also known as Cat's-foot. In Britain this is a mountainous plant in the south but can be found at sea-level in Scotland. It prefers dry habitats to which is it well adapted. Seen here at Keen of Hamar, Unst, Shetland, where the loose regolith of small stones comes to the surface.

The Keen of Hamar, Unst is a National Nature Reserve (NNR), Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and and Special Area of Conservation (SAC), designated for its plant and geological interest. It is a hilly moonscape of serpentine scree, and supports rare plants such as the endemic Edmonston's chickweed.
