Invasive Tree Mallow (Lavatera arborea) on Craigleith, Firth of Forth, taken by Claudia Caporusso. Tree Mallow has spread rapidly and thickly, preventing Puffins from using their burrows. Now much of it has been removed, following a crash in Puffin numbers in the 1990s.

If allowed to grow in dense thickets, Tree mallow covers Puffin burrows and stops the birds accessing them. Removal needs to be done every year and is labour-intensive.
