Common cord grass (Spartina anglica) is an alien species, already introduced to Britain by 1870. It is found on mudflats where it can colonise over sites with wintering wildfowl and wader populations. It has a tendency to monoculture and is less useful to wildlife than the native Spartina maritima, which normally forms part of a species-rich marsh. S. anglica can also hybridise with S. maritima. Here S. anglica is seen on the Skinflats RSPB Nature Reserve on the Firth of Forth.
