Great Yellow Bumblebee (Bombus distinguendus) on Red Clover (Trifolium pratense), Balranald RSPB nature reserve, North Uist. One of Britain's rarest bumblebees, the Great Yellow is now restricted to some Scottish islands and the very north of Scotland. It has a particular association with nectar producing plants such as Red Clover and Bird's Foot Trefoil.

Great Yellow Bumblebee (Bombus distinguendus) on Red clover (Trifolium pratense), Balranald RSPB nature reserve, North Uist. The Great Yellow Bumblebee comes out later in the summer, and can be distinguished from other bumblebees by the black band of hairs joining the bases of its wings.

Common Carder Bumblebee (Bombus pascuorum) on Red clover (Trifolium pratense), Balranald RSPB nature reserve, North Uist. Common Carders are ginger with black hairs on the abdomen. They have a long tongue which allows them to feed on plants with long tubular florets.

Red clover (Trifolium pratense), Japanese Knotweed (Fallopia japonica) and many other herbaceous plants are growing on the former John Brown's site, Clydebank. Red clover is a native nectar-rich plant whereas Japanese knotweed is an invasive, known to take over in a variety of habitats, it is extremely difficult to remove.
