Puffins (Fratercula arctica) nest in burrows, where they lay a single egg with each parent taking it in turns to incubate it. To create their burrows Puffins use their bills to cut into the soil and then shovel away loose material using their feet, the high density of Puffins resulting in large areas of bare ground. Puffins (Fratercula arctica) and Sea Pink (Armeria maritima) on Lunga, Treshnish Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean off Mull. The adult birds return to their nesting colony in late March or early April and lay a single egg in late April or early May.
