Not only does the warden feed the wildfowl, but gives a running commentary on the wildfowl, both when feeding them, then later, in the Observatory itself. View from the heated and comfortable Peter Scott Observatory, Caelaverock Wetlands Centre of the wildfowl gathered on the Whooper Pond in anticipation of feeding time. Whooper Swans (Cygnus cygnus), Mute Swans, Canada Geese and ducks such as Wigeon and Tufted Duck frequent the Whooper Pond, especially at the feeding times of 11am and 2pm, right in front of the Observatory. The reserve is run by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) and has excellent facilities.

Here the warden is leading the wildfowl, particularly the swans, into a funnel-shaped swan pipe where he completes the feeding every day. Then when it is occasionally necessary to catch the birds to monitor or ring them, they are already in the trap and he just needs to close the door and catch them. The reserve is run by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) and has excellent facilities.

Salcot Merse Observatory at the Caerlaverock Wetlands Centre, Dumfriesshire, run by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT). This observatory looks out over the saltmarsh or Merse which covers a large area bordering the Solway Firth. Barnacle Geese and Whooper Swans roost on the Merse or on the Solway at night, and fly in to the reserve to feed during the day. Photo taken by David Palmar.

All three of the Isle of May’s lighthouses can be seen in this picture, taken by Gemma Woodford. The original lighthouse named ‘the Beacon’ (left) was built in 1635. Robert Stephenson built a newer lighthouse in 1816 (centre). Stephenson then built another in 1844 called the ‘Low lighthouse’ (right) which has been redundant since 1887, and is now used by the Isle of May Bird Observatory..
