This is a pioneer annual coastal plant which is able to grow close to the splash zone on sand and shingle, it puts down a long branching tap root to stabilise itself and the sand. Sea campion (Silene uniflora or Silene maritima) at Kirbuster, Stronsay, Orkney, a member of the Chickweed or Pinks family (Caryophyllaceae). Found on coastlines growing on top of cliffs and on shingle. Similar in appearance to Bladder campion (Silene vulgaris), but S. maritima is larger.
