Turtle Dove, RSPB Otmoor

Oxfordshire and Berkshire
Turtle Dove (Streptopelia turtur) on the RSPB Otmoor nature reserve, Oxfordshire. Turtle Doves, the breeding range of which in the UK is restricted to south-east England, have declined sharply over the past few decades, partly due to intensification of farming and hedge removal, and partly because of shooting in south-west Europe when they are on migration to their wintering grounds in West Africa. Habitat restoration including the encouragement of thorny scrub to nest in and plenty of seeds to feed on should help. It is to be hoped that the recent moratorium on shooting in the EU will mitigate the situation.
