Orkney - North Hoy
Red throated diver (Gavia stellata) sitting on the land, Hoy, Orkney. This was strange since it had a well grown chick on the loch nearby. Perhaps it just needed a rest from swimming, or maybe there was a unhatched egg still in a nest. This photo was taken from a great distance with a long lens so as not to disturb the bird. This species is on Schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act, Scotland, and it is an offence to disturb it while on or near a nest.
