The fused sepals of the Bladder campion (Silene vulgaris) create bulges which give the plant its name. In bloom from May to September, this plant can be seen in hedgerows, fields and roadside verges. This photo was taken on Little Cumbrae.

Stonechat (Saxicola torquata), Great Bernera, Lewis. Normally a common species, this was the first observed by the photographer anywhere in Scotland in 2011 after two exceptionally severe winter spells in 2009-10 and 2010-11.

Iron Age House, Bosta, Great Bernera, Lewis, reconstructed in 1996 after being laid bare by a storm in 1992. Five houses were discovered, dating from the late Iron Age or Pictish period, 400-800 AD. The settlement in a sheltered bay, had running water, good grazing and arable land. The people ate seafood, meat and grain. The village is in the care of the Bernera Historical Society.
