It prefers dry habitats to which is it well adapted. Seen here at Keen of Hamar, Unst, Shetland, where the loose regolith of small stones comes to the surface.

It is a hilly moonscape of serpentine scree, and supports rare plants such as the endemic Edmonston's chickweed.
