The iron age wheelhouse at Kilpheder, South Uist. The walls stood at their original height and for nearly two thousand years, the house was very well preserved under the South Uist machair. The wheelhouse was excavated in the mid 20th century. Once the sand was removed, much of the structure crumbled away. Today, very little of the original structure remains. Iron Age House, Bosta, Great Bernera, Lewis, reconstructed in 1996 after being laid bare by a storm in 1992. Five houses were discovered, dating from the late Iron Age or Pictish period, 400-800 AD. The settlement in a sheltered bay, had running water, good grazing and arable land. The people ate seafood, meat and grain. The village is in the care of the Bernera Historical Society.
