Great Yellow Bumblebee (Bombus distinguendus) on Red Clover (Trifolium pratense), Balranald RSPB nature reserve, North Uist. One of Britain's rarest bumblebees, the Great Yellow is now restricted to some Scottish islands and the very north of Scotland. It has a particular association with nectar producing plants such as Red Clover and Bird's Foot Trefoil.

White clover (Trifolium repens) can be found in most grassy areas, as seen here at the side of a cycle path in Milton, Dumbarton. The flowers appear between May and October and are mostly visited by bumblebees. The petals have dew or raindrops on them. Taken by David Palmar.

Great Yellow Bumblebee (Bombus distinguendus) on Red clover (Trifolium pratense), Balranald RSPB nature reserve, North Uist. The Great Yellow Bumblebee comes out later in the summer, and can be distinguished from other bumblebees by the black band of hairs joining the bases of its wings.
