The county flower of Orkney, Alpine Bearberry (Arctostaphylos alpina) can be found at high latitudes as well as mountainous habitat. The berries are edible, turning black when ripe. This photo was taken at Faraclett Head, Rousay, on a plant walk organised by the Orkney Nature Festival.

Spring Squill or Vernal Squill (Scilla verna) is a perennial which rarely grows much taller than 10 to 15cm. It produces blue, star-like, six-petalled flowers from March to August. This plant is in decline and in Britain is now mainly found on the western coasts. This photo was taken on Faraclett Head, Rousay, Orkney
Northern Gannet (Morus bassanus) with fishing net in its beak. Fishing line and net discarded or washed overboard from fishing boats is a significant hazard to Gannets which don't distinguish it from natural nesting materials. The bird tried to remove it by waving its head about for at least 6 minutes.
