A pair of Eider Ducks (Somateria mollissima) were not impressed by the sudden appearance of a Herring Gull (Larus argentatus). Dunlin (Calidris alpina), Sanderling (Calidris alba), and Ringed Plover (Charadrius hiaticula) can also be seen on the shore.

Eider Ducks (Somateria mollissima) at Ballochmartin Bay. First year males are a mottled brown colour, with a prominent white breast. In contrast, adult males in their non-breeding"eclipse" plumage have a dark head, belly, and flanks between July and October.

Oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus) flock on the jetty at Ballochmartin Bay. A single male Eider Duck (Somateria mollissima), Herring Gull (Larus argentatus), and Redshank (Tringa totanus) can also be observed among them.

Normally, more than one female takes charge of a group of young made up from several broods into a creche, but this lone female has managed to look after 5 young. The rate of predation of Eider young by gulls and small mammals is quite high.
