Dunure castle now stands in ruins, overlooking the small harbour of Dunure. The site dates back to the 13th century; however most of the building that remains was probably built in the 15th or 16th century. Once visited by Mary Queen of Scots, there are a variety of traditions and legends surrounding the hiStory of the castle. The Celtic origin of Dunure is said to derive from "hill" or "fort of the Yew tree". Scanned from a slide taken by CE Palmar.
