The Palmar family visiting Dun Carloway broch on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis. Dun Carloway was probably built in the last century BC. It would likely have served as a defensible residence for a large family including space for the animals on the first floor and is still very well preserved. Remains of the Dun Mor (Dùn Mòr) broch at Vaul, Tiree, built in the first century AD as an emergency refuge, with a double wall 25 to 30 feet high, inside which was a staircase. It is thought that the occupants came from southern England and ruled the local people. In later years the ruins were used to make a farmhouse.
