Bilberry or Blaeberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), taken by David Palmar. This deciduous shrub can be present on moors and heaths, typically occurring under Heather (Calluna vulgaris), and in some cases this can be an indicator of the former presence of woodland there.

Bilberry or Blaeberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), taken by David Palmar at the Dell of Abernethy. In the past, Blaeberry was much more widespread and abundant in Scotland. However, since then it has declined due to the loss of the majority of native forest cover and as a consequence of heavy sheep grazing over hundreds of years.

White-tailed bumblebees (Bombus lucorum), at the entrance to their nest, Dell of Abernethy, taken by David Palmar. Bumblebees cannot dig so would have used an abandoned vole or mice burrow. The queen will use materials left by the prior inhabitants for her own nest.

An ancient and apparently healthy Juniper (Juniperus communis) in Abernethy Forest near Nethybridge, where a minority of the Junper plants are dead or dying, possibly infected with the fungal disease Phytophthora sp. The ancient nature of this bush can be deduced from the think gnarled trunk.
