Goldfinches are often found in open, partially wooded lowlands, forest edges, thickets, heaths, streams, riverine and marshy areas with bushes and trees, grasslands with scattered trees, scrub, orchards, gardens, and urban parks and gardens. Here it is on the machair in an area of Common Daisies (Bellis perennis).

Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara), Kelvin Walkway, Glasgow. Coltsfoot can be distinguished from Dandelions by the more densely packed centres of the flower heads (the Dandelion flower is uniform yellow), and by the scaly stem (the Dandelion stem is smooth). The flowers appear in March before the leaves, which are heart-shaped and quite large in relation to the size of the flower.
