South Ayrshire - Girvan
The 18th century castle of Culzean on the Firth of Clyde, a country house rather than a defensive castle, built by Robert Adam under instruction from the 10th Earl of Cassilis. General Eisenhower stayed here four times in the period after the Second World War, during which he was Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, and in recognition of this was given an apartment in the castle. Culzean is now in the hands of the National Trust for Scotland.
