A pair of Common Toads (Bufo bufo), Eskrigg nature reserve, taken by David Palmar. This pair had successfully made it to their breeding pond. Females can produce up to 5000 eggs; however the average female only lays between 1-2000 eggs.

A pair of Common Toads (Bufo bufo), taken by David Palmar. After the males have successfuly fought rival males for their female, he uses ‘nuptial or thumb pads’, to hold on to her back as they make their way to the breeding pond. This is known as 'amplexus'.

Common Toad (Bufo bufo), taken by David Palmar. Common toads are between 5 to 13cm long, and have shorter legs than frogs which encourages them to crawl rather than jump. Toads also have golden, bright eyes and a round snout. These toads are native to the UK but are not found in Ireland.
