Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara), Kelvin Walkway, Glasgow. The flowers bloom and die first, often before any leaves appear. Here is a "Coltsfoot clock", similar to a Dandelion clock, in which fluffy hairs allow the seeds to be dispersed by the wind.

Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara), Kelvin Walkway, Glasgow. The flowers normally bloom and die first, often before any leaves appear. The leaves are supposed to resemble the cloven hoof of a colt. Here, rarely, the flower and the leaves are seen together.

Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara), Kelvin Walkway, Glasgow. Coltsfoot can be distinguished from Dandelions by the more densely packed centres of the flower heads (the Dandelion flower is uniform yellow), and by the scaly stem (the Dandelion stem is smooth). The flowers appear in March before the leaves, which are heart-shaped and quite large in relation to the size of the flower.
