Short-necked oil beetle (Meloe brevicollis), Crossapol, Coll. This is a rare beetle, declining in the early 20th century and being unrecorded between 1948 and 2006 when it was rediscovered. It is currently known only from Coll, and from single locations in south Devon, Salisbury Plain and one record in 2020 in Pembrokeshire. The beetle is a parasite of solitary bees.

Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) displaying on Lunga, Treshnish Isles. Shags in the breeding season can be distinguished from Cormorants, even at a distance, by having crests. This one is displaying by moving its head about to impress its spouse.

Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) on Lunga, Treshnish Isles. Shags in the breeding season can be distinguished from Cormorants, even at a distance, by having crests. This one is on a nest which consists of any material the Shag can gather, often seaweed but in this case the hollow stems of last year's herbaceous growth.
