Barpa Langais, a neolithic chambered cairn, North Uist. Built about 5000 years ago, it was a burial place and a focus for community ritual. It is the best preserved example of a chambered cairn in the Outer Hebrides, and is about 25 metres in diameter.

In the middle distance is the white-roofed building covering Midhowe chambered cairn, Rousay, and to the right, the Midhowe Broch. Chambered cairns are neolithic burial places and may date from about 3500 BC. Brochs are thought to be defensive settlement structures.
