Western Isles - Uig, Great Bernera and Mangurstadh, Lewis
Uig chessman sculpted by Stephen Hayward in 2006 at Cappadale, Ardroil, Uig, Lewis, commissioned by Uig Community Council to commemorate the hoard of walrus ivory chess pieces found in Uig in 1831. Normally housed between the National Museum of Scotland and the British Museum, some of the pieces were lent to a special exhibition in Stornoway during 2011. They are probably of Norse origin, and are thought to date from the 12th century, during the 450 years of Norse rule in the Western Isles.
