Common Blue (Polyommatus icarus) butterfly on Heather or Ling (Calluna vulgaris), Ailsa Craig, Firth of Clyde. A very common butterfly, found in a range of sheltered sunny habitats. Underwings are similar between sexes. However, colouration can vary in the female's upper wings, with some being more brown than blue.

Meadow Pipit (Anthus pratensis) perchad amongst Heather or Ling (Calluna vulgaris), Braehead Moss raised bog, South Lanarkshire. The site was designated as an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) in 1981, and as an SAC (Special Area of Conservation) in 2005. The central part of the site is a National Nature Reserve. SNH (Scottish Natural Heritage) is responsible for managing the site including encouraging water retention, restricting grazing and peat cutting and discouraging encroachment of woodland.

Fox Moth (Macrothylacia rubi) caterpillar on Heather or Ling (Calluna vulgaris), Braehead Moss, South Lanarkshire. The Fox Moth is a moorland or bog species and feeds amongst other plants on Heather. The caterpillars of this moth hibernate fully grown, but will emerge to bask in the spring sunshine before pupating in April. You can tell this is a young caterpillar from its orange banding.
