Firth of Clyde - Great Cumbrae
Peacock butterfly (Aglais io) on a White Buddleia (Buddleja davidii). Peacocks hibernate over winter, and because of this are one of the first butterflies to emerge in early spring. With large eyespots which give it its name, the Peacock can be seen on any sunny day throughout its Scottish range. In May they will lay clusters of up to 500 eggs mainly on Nettle (Urtica dioica). Caterpillars will feed throughout June and will pupate alone, emerging from July. The 'Butterfly bush' Buddleia offers a rich nectar source and will attract Peacocks and other butterflies to gardens around the late summer.
