Bell Heather (Erica cinerea), Braehead Moss raised bog, South Lanarkshire. The site was designated as an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) in 1981, and as an SAC (Special Area of Conservation) in 2005. The central part of the site is a National Nature Reserve. SNH (Scottish Natural Heritage) is responsible for managing the site including encouraging water retention, restricting grazing and peat cutting and discouraging encraochment of woodland.

Large Heath (Coenonympha tullia) butterfly on Bell Heather (Erica cinerea), Braehead Moss raised bog, South Lanarkshire. This is subspecies polydama, with indistinct eye spots, intermediate in appearance between the northern subspecies scotica and the English subspecies tullia. You can see its proboscis as it hunts for nectar in the Bell Heather.

Large Heath (Coenonympha tullia) butterfly on Bell Heather (Erica cinerea), Braehead Moss raised bog, South Lanarkshire. This is subspecies polydama, with indistinct eye spots, intermediate in appearance between the northern subspecies scotica and the English subspecies tullia.
