Group of Red-breasted Mergansers (Mergus serrator), Tiree. On the right is a probable first year male which has a dark eye-ring during moult which begins in August and lasts throughout the winter and even as late as April.
Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) on Lunga, Treshnish Isles. Shags in the breeding season can be distinguished from Cormorants, even at a distance, by having crests. This one is on a nest which consists of any material the Shag can gather, often seaweed but in this case the hollow stems of last year's herbaceous growth.
