Marmalade Hoverflies on Fox-and-cubs

Marmalade Hoverflies (Episyrphus balteatus) drinking nectar from Fox-and-Cubs (Pilosella aurantiaca). This is our most common hoverfly. They are on the wing throughout the year but can be seen in large numbers like this in the summer. Fox and Cubs, Orange Hawkbit or Orange Hawkweed (Pilosella aurantiaca or the synonym Hieracium aurantiacum) is aggregated under Hawkweeds and / or Hawkbits in the genus Pilosella, or alternatively Hieracium agg. The botanical classification seems complicated at the very least! Picture taken by Sarah Longrigg in Milngavie.

Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) curled up beside the Forth and Clyde Canal, Glasgow, taken by David Palmar. Red foxes do quite well in the city, where it is warmer than the countryside, and where food is in reasonable supply, either from bins, from children throwing away their excess food, or from more conventional sources, such as rodents.

Red fox (Vulpes vulpes), one of several which live beside the Forth and Clyde Canal , taken in Maryhill by David Palmar. This looks like a healthy example of a fox, which must be making a good living in the city with its supplies of food thrown out by people.
