Oystercatchers (Haematopus ostralegus) and Black-tailed godwits (Limosa limosa) on Musselburgh lagoons, taken by Claudia Caporusso. The lagoons were formed from fly-ash produced by the former Cockenzie coal-fired power station, and now form a high-tide wader roost visible from three screens from which good views can be obtained, but which have concrete seats and no roof, so take a cushion and wrap up well in winter!

Black-tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa) in flight, Kinneil, Firth of Forth. When in flight, the Black-tailed Godwit's legs extend further back than its tail. This is one way to distinguish it from a Bar-tailed Godwit, which has shorter legs often hidden by its tail when in flight.

A flock of Bar-tailed godwits (Limosa lapponica) in flight at Kinneil, Firth of Forth. The Bar-tailed has a slightly upturned bill, and in flight, its legs are tucked in under its tail. On the extreme right is the tail of a Black tailed godwit (Limosa limosa), less common in Scotland than the Bar-tailed, and distinguished from it by the black tip to its tail, and by legs trailing out behind the tail.
